Snapchat is one of the apps teens use most to talk with friends. Disappearing messages, streaks and quick friend adds make it fun, and they also make it hard for parents to know what is going on. No single setting makes Snapchat completely safe. Combining Snapchat’s own tools, phone-level controls and regular conversations gets you much closer.
Snapchat’s own parental controls: Family Center
Snapchat has a built-in tool for parents called Family Center. To use it, you need your own Snapchat account and you must be Snapchat friends with your teen.
- Open Snapchat and go to your Profile, then Settings (the gear icon). You can also search for “Family Center”, “parent” or “safety”.
- Open Family Center and invite your teen.
- Your teen receives an invitation card and must tap Accept to join.
Once your teen accepts, Family Center lets you:
- see your teen’s existing and new friends;
- see who they are chatting with;
- get insights into the average time they spend in the app and how it breaks down across features;
- request your teen’s location and share yours;
- report concerning accounts, confidentially.
Family Center deliberately does not show the content of your teen’s private conversations.
Where Snapchat’s controls stop
- Your teen has to opt in. Family Center only works after the teen accepts the invitation.
- You see who, not what. You can see contacts, but not what is said or sent.
- Insight, not limits. Family Center shows time spent, but it does not switch Snapchat off at bedtime or after a daily allowance.
- It only covers Snapchat. Risky contact can move to another app or the browser in seconds.
That is why many parents add controls at the phone level as well.
What Safe Lagoon can do for Snapchat on Android
Safe Lagoon is a parental control app for Android. You install the blue Safe Lagoon app on your child’s phone and manage everything from the orange Parent app or the Web Center. Safe Lagoon does not read Snapchat messages. It controls when Snapchat can be used and alerts you to risky moments.
Daily time limits for Snapchat
Set how long Snapchat, or the whole Social category, can be used on the days you choose. In the Parent app, open your child’s profile, go to App Control, open schedules and screen time, tap + and choose Create Screen Time Rule. How to set up time limits for apps.
Schedules for bedtime and school
Schedules turn categories such as Social off between two times on selected days, for example overnight or during class. How to create a schedule.
Block Snapchat completely
If your child is too young for Snapchat, or you need a break, add it to the Always blocked list in App Control and it will not open. How to block or allow specific apps.
AI Shield alerts
AI Shield watches the child’s Android device and alerts you when something looks risky, often with a screenshot of that moment. You see suspicious events only, not full chat histories or everyday screen time. How to set up AI Shield.
If you need more context, Screen Mirror shows a timeline of screenshots grouped by app and time. AI Shield vs Screen Mirror vs Gallery.
Talk first, then set controls
Controls work best when your teen knows about them and why they are there. Agree on screen-time rules together, explain what you can and cannot see, and make it clear they can come to you when something online feels wrong. Our guide Snapchat sexting and teens: risks, signs and what parents can do covers how to start that conversation.
